By setting Record .AVI track properties you can define the size and quality of the “avi” file as well as customise certain features of its Layout and visual design, like logos, titles, fonts, and background colour.

To set properties of the Record .AVI track:

1. Right-click on the Record .AVI track header (in the area below the Playback toolbar) and select “Track properties…”.
   
   • The properties dialog is displayed, open on the Filename tab.
     
2. Click the browse button to the right of the box labelled “Filename to save to”.
   • The Windows Save As dialog is displayed.
   • Navigate to a location, enter a file name for the recorded *.avi and click Save.
     Tip: If the path you select is in the Project Base Folder, or a subfolder thereof, the path is automatically converted to a relative path. See Creating an Analysis Project.
3. Click on the AVI tab.
   
4. Select one of the Video Size options:
   
   • Standard size – if you select this option, choose one of the standard screen resolutions from the associated drop-down list.
   • Custom size – if you select this option, enter the required dimensions in pixels (e.g., 1920 x 1080 pixels).
     • The default custom size is taken from Simulator Project Settings and used for all new Record AVI tracks.
       Note: The maximum permitted value of X or Y is 2000 pixels. If the aspect ratio is locked, automatic size adjustments will respect this maximum and the aspect ratio.
     • Select an aspect ratio, which defines the relationship between height and width of the image. Four options are available: 16:9, 21:9, 4:3 and Custom. For the non-custom options, the aspect ratio is locked and cannot be unlocked.
     • For custom aspect ratios, the option to link/unlink the size to the aspect ratio is enabled.
       
       • When the sizes and aspect ratio are linked, changing one dimension automatically updates the other dimension such that the aspect ratio is always respected.
       • When the sizes and aspect ratio are unlinked, changing a dimension automatically updates the custom aspect ratio. The other image dimension is not changed.
   • To enter a different aspect ratio, select “Custom” from the aspect ratio drop-down, and enter the ratio in the adjacent box.
   • The ratio must be in the form x:y and each side can have up to two decimal places. Only positive numbers, decimal point and the colon character may be entered, and aspect ratio components must be greater than zero.
   • If the entered ratio is invalid for any reason, the box is highlighted with a red border. For example, here the right-hand side of the ratio is missing:
     
   • To link or unlink the sizes and aspect ratio, click the link/unlink button between the size boxes.
     
   • The icon or button here indicates whether sizes and aspect-ratio are linked:
     • this icon (not a button) means sizes are linked to the aspect ratio; they cannot be unlinked.
     • this button means sizes and aspect ratio are linked but can be unlinked.
     • this button means sizes and aspect ratio are not linked but can be linked.
       Tip: Sizes are always automatically linked to preset (non-custom) aspect ratios. Only custom aspect ratios let you link or unlink sizes to the aspect ratio.
5. Select a video codec from the Codec drop-down list (choose the one that best matches your installed software).
6. Click and drag the Quality bar to set a value between 0 and 100 (100 being the best quality and least compression).
7. Click and drag the Speed bar to specify the speed you want the simulation to be recorded at (the range is between 1x (real time) and 30x (30 times real time).
8. If you don’t want to change the Layout of the avi, go to the next step.
   • If you want to change the Layout of the avi, click the Layout… button and see Customising the .AVI Layout.
9. The Video Size, Layout, Compression and Speed settings can be reused, individually or as a whole, in other Record .AVI tracks.
   • This option is only available if there’s more than one Record .AVI track.
     
   • Click the “Apply to all Record AVI tracks” button. A selection dialog appears:
     
   • Click on the items to reuse; hold <CTRL> while clicking to select multiple items.
   • Click the OK button. Settings of the selected items are applied to all Record .AVI tracks in the active Timeline. Selections are remembered and items are automatically selected again the next time this dialog appears.
10. Click on the Track Info tab to see a summary of this track.
    
    • Using the checkbox labelled “Enable this track” you can enable or disable it here (you can also do this on the track header).
      • You can also select which Visual Config is used when recording the .avi file. The default selection is Videos. See Using Visual Configs With Timeline Tracks for more information.
11. Click OK to apply these settings.
